Rugbybond zoekt sterke, snelle, stoere hockeysters

Well, here we are, halfway MOvember.

Despite my earnest pleas for votes and funds I was free to chose my own MO and I went for the obvious "Village People" Number.

Clearly I am suffering for my Art, but so should you.
Pls donate freely at http://mobro.co/basdenuijl

The only donations so far have been from my mother and mother in law and it is obvious they love me! *they have no choice....

Where is the other love! All funds go towards raising awareness on male health issues and better cancer research, (more info here at nl.movember.com )

Just like last year, I will gladly be participating in Movember 2011. As every year men around the world will let their moustache grow during the month of November starting clean shaven to raise awareness for typical male illnesses, such as Testicular Cancer. But also to raise money for Cancer research. The donations in Holland will all go towards the NKI-AVL  .

So please give freely, but this time I have a little incentive for you ;-)

When you make your donation here: http://www.mobro.co/basdenuijl you can indicate which Upperlip enhancement you think I should grow!

There are 4 models to choose from, and when you donate generously, please indicate your preference, let the MO with the most Mo Win (see what I did there ;-) )!

So, here are your choices:

Option 1:

Sun, 30 Oct 2011 13:25:00 -0700 Olifantenpaadjes (Desire Paths at the Engelbewaarder) http://blog.denuijl.com/olifantenpaadjes-desire-paths-at-the-engelbew http://blog.denuijl.com/olifantenpaadjes-desire-paths-at-the-engelbew

As we like to do on occasion, we settled for lunch at the Engelbewaarder, a firm family favorite in Amsterdam.

There often are really cool foto expositions and this time was no exception: Olifantenpaadjes, by Jan-Dirk van der Burg. The images are just so very cool and I love the concepts, people will find their own way and it is wonderful to see how people vote with their feet. A lot of people have to trod these paths, also before they are visible..... olifantenpaadjes (elephant paths, correct translation is desire paths/lines) are those weird shortcuts. Have a look at the fotos and you will recognize them instantly. The broader and more eroded the path, the more popular. Simple...

BTW, I always keep being reminded about how ants organise their trails: See for instance here: and here. Swarm intelligence at work

So, a consensus is reached by everyone simply using a more prefferable line through the landscape. Simply amazing. No discussions, no planning, it just happens.

See more (International) fotos here or have lunch at the Engelbewaarder and watch the exposition and play some pinball while you are there.

So, here we are on a pretty cool campside where there is horse riding every day and some cool places to visit, Biarritz and Bayonne for instance. And rugby everywhere! Great food, have now eaten every part of a duck I think.

So, all good ;-)

Wed, 27 Apr 2011 12:58:56 -0700 A pilgrimmage.... http://blog.denuijl.com/a-pilgrimmage http://blog.denuijl.com/a-pilgrimmage
Pilgimmage

"A pilgrimage is a journey or search of great moral or spiritual significance. Typically, it is a journey to a shrine or other location of importance to a person's beliefs and faith. "

So, this must have been when I was 19 or 20...

On a vacation to England with Mascha and my parents we visited Rugby School.
There is a plaque on a wall there commemorating the birth of Rugby as seen in the pictures.

The Plaque reads:
THIS STONE
COMMEMORATES THE EXPLOIT OF
WILLIAM WEBB ELLIS
WHO WITH A FINE DISREGARD FOR THE RULES OF FOOTBALL
AS PLAYED IN HIS TIME
FIRST TOOK THE BALL IN HIS ARMS AND RAN WITH IT
THUS ORIGINATING THE DISTINCTIVE FEATURE OF
THE RUGBY GAME
A.D. 1823

The story of William Webb Ellis is now a well established untruth, like all creation myths....

So, if you think I am sometimes a little obsessed with rugby.... it is now well documented you might be right and the obsession has been with me for a long time ;-)

I mean, the grades are fine and they appear to be friendly and well behaved (at school....).
There is no other reason why my children would be sitting in the front of the class, surely!
Maybe to set a good example, this is how you pay attention everyone!

Yeah, that must be it!

Tue, 04 Jan 2011 01:29:00 -0800 In Defense of The Memory Theater http://blog.denuijl.com/in-defense-of-the-memory-theater http://blog.denuijl.com/in-defense-of-the-memory-theater

So here I am, divided between the E-reader (i own a Kindle) and the old fashioned books.

To read, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the kindle. I have a cover for my kindle (so it fits in my hand like a normal book) which also contains a little light, so I can read in the dark for instance. In fact reading on the kindle is fine, very fine, often better then holding an old paperback or a cumbersome hardcover (never liked them...).

Though some books are more fun to read in the "harware" version then in paperback, for instance due to their great design, like the black sparrow press books , great illustrations or clever use of the medium itself like A heartbreaking work of staggering genius . And sure there is some nostalgia value there.

But a good e-reader is not to be sniffed at....

Offcourse there are some massive downsides to an e-reader. Digital books are not by definition cheaper. To my eternal surprise they are often even more expensive in digital form... For myself, I do not want Hardbacks. they are no fun to read and simply to clunky. But sometimes you want to read a book as soon as it is out. Now that is where the e-reader is perfect. It is often cheaper then the hardback ;-).

There is also a host of digital books out there that are free to download, legally as well as illegally and as long as the digital books also exist outside of your e-reader you will always have a digital copy.

So, what about the hardware, the pulped trees?

Well, I love them! I love books, I love having them, I love looking at them but I do not find I have to read them in the dead tree version.. This does not mean I do not want the book!!! So, even if I have read the digital version I will eventually buy the paper version, but it wont be new! I will eventually find it in for instance my favorite book store in Amsterdam The book exchange, great deals at amazon or off course E-bay. Also, most of the books I want to own are not in the regular bookshop since they focus on all the "Newer"  books and these are often not the books I am looking for. This is by the way also true of the digital versions, Often I can find the books in the bookexchange I can not find in digital form and even then it is often cheaper second hand.

All of this is offcourse self justification ;-) So, I was glad to read the following article: In defence of my memory theatre!

In Defense of the Memory Theater

What concerns me about the literary apocalypse that everybody now expects—the at least partial elimination of paper books in favor of digital alternatives—is not chiefly the books themselves, but the bookshelf. My fear is for the eclectic, personal collections that we bookish people assemble over the course of our lives, as well as for their grander, public step-siblings. I fear for our memory theaters.
